Robert Thom, J. Marion Sims: Gynecologic Surgeon (1952). Collection of Michigan Medicine, University of Michigan.
Commissioned by pharmaceutical company Parke-Davis, this painting presents a heroic image of medical progress. It does not convey the full reality of the enslaved Black women, including Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey, whose painful, experimental surgeries contributed to the development of gynaecological techniques.
Their suffering deserves to be remembered alongside the medical history.
