Our Approach to Sustainability

At Daughters of History, we believe that what we stand for should extend beyond the designs we create.

We’re committed to making thoughtful choices wherever we can — from the materials we use and the way our products are made, to the packaging they arrive in and the businesses we choose to work with.

We don’t believe sustainability is about being perfect. It’s about making better choices where possible, being honest about the choices we make, and continually looking for ways to improve.

Thoughtful production

Our clothing and tote bags are produced through Inkthreadable, who offer organic apparel options and use 100% plastic-free packaging. Their production model also allows us to create products when they are ordered, rather than holding large quantities of finished stock.

This helps us avoid unnecessary inventory and the potential waste associated with producing products that may never be sold.

More considered packaging

We’ve made a conscious effort to minimise plastic in our packaging and choose paper and cardboard alternatives wherever possible.

For our clothing and other products fulfilled through Inkthreadable, packaging is plastic-free.

For our art prints, which are carefully packed and sent by us, we use a combination of recyclable paper and cardboard packaging, including recyclable book mailers, recycled tissue paper and paper-based packaging materials.

Our book mailers are made from recyclable materials, while our recycled tissue paper is sourced from Tiny Box Company, whose wider packaging range is focused on recycled, recyclable and compostable materials.

We also use eco-friendly kraft paper tape instead of plastic packing tape wherever possible.

Our logo labels are paper-based and are applied directly to recyclable packaging. Where an adhesive label is attached to recyclable cardboard, it can remain with the packaging for recycling.

Giving back

Our art prints are produced through Giclée & Co, who use carbon-neutral shipping and plant a tree with every order.

We love that the purchase of an art print can therefore support not only the artist and the small business behind it, but also a wider environmental initiative.

Small choices matter too

Sustainability isn’t only about the products we sell.

Even the laptop used to design and run Daughters of History was purchased refurbished rather than new — because we believe that extending the life of existing products is another simple way to make a more considered choice.

We’re a small business, and we know there is always more we can do. Some materials we currently use are chosen for practical and protective reasons, and we won’t make environmental claims about materials unless we can verify them.

Instead, we’re committed to continuing to review our suppliers, packaging and processes and to choosing better alternatives whenever they become available and practical for our business.

Better choices, wherever we can.

We may not be perfect, but we care about the impact of the choices we make.

And as Daughters of History grows, we intend for our approach to sustainability to grow with it.
